Dust (reprise)

Sorry I haven't posted for a long while.  I have more content that I hope to upload soon.  This is my attempt to turn my poem "Dust" into a song.

And she walks down to the shore
Up to the edge of the waves
The distance to the sunset
Is matched only by her gaze

And no strings bind her
That would keep her from going where she wants
And I hope peace finds her
But I fear there is nowhere she belongs

And her home is like the dust from God's fingers
Cast everywhere, but never stopping to linger

All empires crumble to the ground
But men still seek to build them tall
There all built on foundations unsound
She knows as she watches them fall

But they still laugh at her
Cause she has nothing in their eyes
But it doesn't matter
Because she sees through truth's disguise

And her home is like the dust from God's fingers
Cast everywhere, but never stopping to linger

It's hard to love this girl
Who's happy to pass me by
But I want to see her unfurl
The love that she carries inside

And I want her to spread her wings
That she's so afraid to unfurl
I want her to laugh and sing
And spread her love throughout the whole wide world

And her love is like the dust from God's fingers
Cast everywhere but never stopping to linger

Unkown

I could only tell you what it's like to be there
And yet you will never know how it can be felt
I would only try to explain what cannot be said

Describe the unknown
The unknown

I could only try to show you how it might be
But still your heart would not be able to see
I might leave you to yourself to think about that

Think of the unknown
So unknown

I can feel this place that is somewhere out there
It is this place that asks for nothing in return
All it ever asks is for me to feel right at home
And without words

I will gladly stay
In the unknown

You might think that some words
Would not dare to fail me
And yet there are none that I can
Try to bring about
You could only try to make me talk about it,

But it stays unknown
It's unknown

All it ever asks is for me to feel right at home
And without words

I will gladly stay
In the unknown

I will never try to find words where there are none,
And yet some will try to follow where I have been
I will always try to keep this place inside me

Where it is unknown
It's unknown

Starchild

Sunrise
Touches eyes
Trembling before its glory
Along with all they see

Life-giving light
So primal
In its beauty,
Sparkles red and purple
Through the leaves and their birds singing praises of the darkness falling away

I have come here to meet the sun

Through this drama
Played out endlessly
Over and over
Before and after the last man
I stand
Its lonely child
In awe of its divine indifference to all that it illuminates

Why is it so easy
To find beauty in what lies so distant
While at the same time human company
Draws only the distance of a vacant stare
Towards the specific vagueries which numb the mind to time's passing
And throw one into the endless circles of monotonous conversation

Beauty
So apparent from far away
In the sovereignty of the sun over my head
Dissipates
As the proximity increases
In the words of a friend or the glance of a passer by

My mind
So enraptured by the inhumanity of the open sky
Cringes
When it brings its focus closer
To its own fractures refelected in the regular imaginings of other minds' eyes

But I am still with the sun this morning

Ensconced by the warmth of its rays
My awareness stretches
Moment by moment
My experience reaching out
Enveloping everything in my gaze
Feeling myself a blink in the eyes of the sun and stars from which I'm made

Dreamself

Sorry I have been MIA for a while.  Here are some more song lyrics I've written.

They say
That when you are awake
That you are you
And I am me

But they say
That when you are dreaming
That you everything
'Cause your mind creates all that it sees

But what if I told you
That it never changes
'Cause when you awaken
You're still dreaming
And the world that surrounds you
Is all that you are
Cause the mind that percieves it
Arises from everything

And your life is the world's dream

But sometimes
Your mind runs in circles
And the love that's between us
Seems so far away
And the future expanding
Along with your past
Takes you away from the present
And all that you are here and now

And I wrote this song for you

Cause your life is the dream of the world
And your life is the world's dream

Music To Feel By

the moment the sun
touches my face with its light,
It absorbs my mind

Interstitial Selves/Headcrack

The content of this poem is probably not appropriate for this blog but I'm going to post it anyway.  To some extent, however, i think it is a fitting counterpoint to my poem We Know Each Other.  Parts of Interstitial Selves also remind me of the aspects of the city that I describe in Displacement, though the narrator in former poem has certainly been infected by the movement of the city much more than the narrator in the latter poem.

Interstitial Selves
Inside the café
I look out on to the small portion of the city grid that unfolds before my eyes:
Beyond the softness of my translucent reflection on the window pane
Towards the sea of black coats, umbrellas and moving shapes that grace the landscape.

Another person,
Another life:
Another unread novel rotting on the shelf
Passed over by all who would read it;
Passed by on the city street.

Can you feel the rain between us
As you move on
Pretending not to see the face that stares past my prints
Shining off the window after these longing fingers pull away?

I have seen it in your face when you look down or straight ahead
And pass by the others in your bubble as if living in your own dream:
Merely a distant gaze,
You face the throng,
Face desire
Face the unconscious need that drives the surrounding movement forward
Towards the discovery of its own emptiness that renews its search and its longing.

You do not share this longing:
Dwelling in this space between the others
Content to be carried along by the forces beyond your control

How I wish your calmness would infect the world around you
So as to part this ocean of desirous chaos
That I might walk to you
Look you in the eyes
And smile…

The Landing

My life is currently filled with empty space.  How ironic that I felt more at home when I was homeless (see my poem Dust), than now, when I am at home...

The Landing (The Lost Kingdom)
 The cloud,
A formless palace in the sky,
Drifts by in the haze of this fleeting dreamworld:
Out the window that keeps me separate
From the freedom of its emptiness
As if to enter it's glittering void of star and city light
Would immediately dissolve it into its own abyss...

 Consecrated by this boundary
 This metal bubble drifts through
 This most intangible of kingdoms:
 Empire for the passing bird
 Who never stop here
 To make their home
But ride along the fallow winds
That blow in this world of transition.

How I long
To join the darkened skies,
And drift among the passing clouds:
To live forever in the flux and flow
Of the homelessness of empty space.

But I am not asleep tonight
As dreams fly me outside this shell
Made of flight and metal hollow
To the wind's cry in my new domain.

But ground draws me towards its wake
For dreams that flew me from its grasp
As my world falls from me like a stone
And from this,
My kingdom
I stand overthrown.

Escapist: Two poems

I have been hesitant to post these because of their escapist content... but now the time has come...

Dreamer
In a distant universe
In a distant galaxy
Around a distant star
On a distant planet
In a distant house
With a distant mind

Someone feels the same as me.

Dreamscape
Sometimes
When the sun goes down,
But does not take with it the weight of daily life,
I find my eyes looking up
To the lights that share their wisdom with my troubled mind.

Most days
My mind finds times when it acquiesces to the struggle
Of the pressures that the world thrusts upon it,
But still it finds refuge in the stars
That shelter from the ever-shifting flow
Of the illusions that press on me to change.

Every night
When my eyes travel the infinity above my head,
I am freed from careless thoughts that drift aimlessly in my mind
The openness of space greets me with its silent embrace.

Send me adrift around the stars,
Past the endless nebulas, planets and their suns!
Orbit me around the galaxies that stand indifferent to our human time:
A blink of an eye that’s quickly forgotten in the infinite.
Up there I find myself as the calm that permeates the emptiness
As I feel all those careless boundaries peel away…

Legion

Lyrics:

Enveloped in a sentiment,
a sound that rushes over me.
Engage an impulse to pretend
I have a faith that's pure.
Not forgetting what it means to dream.
Indulging everything.
Entertaining thoughts that I've the strength
of those I yearn to be.
Cheers and tribute greet the saviors.
Reckless thoughts survive.
Anachronistic and impulsive...

And what will happen?
Will I dream?
I am too scared to close my eyes.
For a second dreams hold me.
None can change in me these things that I believe.
But I don't know what happens now.
I am too scared to close my eyes.
